YOGA FOR BEGINNERS
All you need to get started
Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji,” meaning yoke or union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body. It incorporates breathing exercises, meditation and poses designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress.
A few simple guidelines are:
Keep your joints stacked. e.g. Shoulders above wrists in plank and front knee above ankle in lunge
Never put pressure on a delicate joint. e.g. Place your foot below or above your knee in tree pose, never on the knee itself
Always warm up
Don’t hyperextend. If you’re super flexible, it’s better to pull back and focus on strengthening within a pose rather than pushing your body to it’s full limits
Things I wish I knew earlier:
Yoga is not a religious practice
Props are your best friend
It doesn't matter if you cant do a pose
Yoga is not just for the flexible
Yoga is not just for the slimmer body shape
Don't eat right before practising (allow an hour, or eat something light)
No one is looking at you
Get comfortable with the basics
It shouldn't hurt
Self study is everything
Your mat will always catch you
If your breathing your doing yoga!
Most importantly the teacher is your guide. It is your practice, have fun with it & smile.
